چکیده

OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the changes in clinical parameters and in the approach to patients submitted to radioiodine therapy for Graves’ disease. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Dossiers of 226 patients submitted to radioiodine therapy for Graves’ disease in the period between January 1990 and December 2001 were retrospectively evaluated. For the purposes of statistical analysis, the 12-year period was subdivided into three periods of 4 years, with a comparison of clinical and laboratory variables in these periods. RESULTS: The authors have observed that the total number of patients referred for radioiodine therapy as well as the percentage of female patients presented a significant increase (from 62% to 86%; p = 0.005). The percentage of patients pretreated with methimazole before radioiodine therapy increased significantly (from 9.1% to 35.6%; p = 0.03). The mean radioiodine dose delivered has also presented a significant increase (from 7.6 mCi to 12.7 mCi; p = 0.000003) with a direct reflection on a higher percentage of patients cured one year after the radioiodine therapy (from 55.6% to 83.7%; p = 0.004). CONCLUSION: Radioiodine therapy has increasingly been accepted for treatment of patients with Graves’ disease and the doses delivered have increased to achieve a permanent cure as well as a reduction of the chances of recurrence.

Effects of treatment with radioiodine (¹³¹I) on the gonadal function of the hyperthyroid patients

Introduction: Hyperthyroidism is a relatively common disorder caused by different etiologies. Graves’ disease, and toxic-nodular goiter (Plummer’s disease) are among the most common causes. Treatment with radioiodine is considered to be the treatment of choice in many of the patients. Higher biological half-life of ¹³¹I in hyperthyroid patients as compared with patients with differentiate...

Radioiodine (131-I) treatment for Graves’ disease: Geant4 Monte Carlo simulation for patient personalized dose estimation

Background: Reliable estimation of radiation-absorbed dose is necessary to evaluate the benefits and the risks of radiopharmaceuticals used for diagnostic or therapeutic purposes in nuclear medicine. Materiel and Methods: This study included 47 patients treated with iodine-131 for Graves’ disease. A comparative study between Geant4 Monte Carlo simulation and MIRD formalism was carried out to ev...

Prognostic Factors in the Relapse of Graves’ Disease Following Treatment with Antithy-roid Drugs

Background: Patients with Graves’ disease exhibit a considerable rate of relapse after treatment with antithyroid drugs and require ablative therapy. Objective: The purpose of this study was to evaluate variables which can be used as prognostic factors in predicting the outcome of Graves’ disease after treatment with antithyroid drugs. Methods: Age, sex, duration of antithyroid drug therapy, pr...

Treatment of Graves' hyperthyroidism--prognostic factors for outcome.

OBJECTIVE To determine whether clinical and biochemical features of Graves' disease at presentation predict response to medical and radioiodine treatment. METHODS We carried out a retrospective 10-year study of 194 consecutive Saudi subjects with Graves' disease who were treated with antithyroid drugs, radioiodine therapy, or both, between January 1995 and December 2004 at King Khalid Univers...

مقایسه نتایج دو روش درمان با I¹³¹ با دوز ثابت 5 میلی کوری و دوز ثابت 10 میلی کوری در درمان بیماری گریوز، بیمارستان شریعتی، 80-1378

Radioiodine therapy is the safest, simplest, least expensive and most effective method for treatment of Graves' disease. Due to difficulties in previous methods for dose determination, fixed dose method of 1-131 is now considered the best practical method for 1-131 therapy in Graves' disease, but there is no consensus on the dose. We compared two routinely recommended fixed doses of 5 and 10 mC...
